Submission Guidelines

For poetry, we welcome submissions of 3-6 poems, up to ten pages in total.

  • Please submit all poems in one document (.pdf, .docx, .doc), with each poem on its own page, in Times New Roman or Garamond.

  • Send visual poetry in this category as well.

  • Please also include, in your cover letter, a short third-person bio.

We welcome fiction submissions up to 9,000 words.

  • We are looking for fully embodied stories that remind us of what it means to be alive, that show us something new, and that stand up over many reads, deepening each time.

  • Please submit in Times New Roman or Garamond, size 12 font, and include, in your cover letter, a short third-person bio.

Nonfiction submissions may also be up to 9,000 words.

  • We seek nonfiction that bends—but doesn't break—the genre.

  • We appreciate risk-taking with structure, chronology, form, and other elements of nonfiction (save for truth—there’s no messing with that) that tell a richly textured story.

  • We are open to memoir that goes beyond the personal story to engage with larger ideas through the use of research, multiple narrative voices, and chronological deviations.

  • Nonfiction will be fact checked.

  • Please submit in Times New Roman or Garamond, size 12 font, and include, in your cover letter, a short third-person bio.

We respect your commitment to your work and your desire to get it out into the world, so we do accept simultaneous submissions. We only ask that if your piece is accepted elsewhere, you let us know immediately by withdrawing the piece, if it is prose, or, for poetry, by adding a note to the Submittable submission telling us which poem(s) from your submission you are withdrawing.

We value your work, so we will try to respond to your submission as soon as possible. However, as we receive hundreds—sometimes thousands—of submissions, sometimes backups to occur. Please feel free to query if you have not heard back from us within six [6] months.

If you would like to submit a review essay for consideration, please contact us directly at grr@umn.edu.
